Oil palm became popular in Uganda through the oil palm production project that started in 2002 through a tripartite Public Private Partnership (PPP) with Oil Palm Uganda Limited (OPUL), Kalangala Oil Palm Grower’s Trust (KOPGT), and the Government of Uganda through the Vegetable Oil Development Project (VODP) with funding from IFAD.
FFB are first transferred to the palm oil mills for sterilisation by applying high-pressure steam, whereupon the palm fruits are enzyme-deactivated and separated from the palm bunches. After steaming, the palm fruitlets are crushed in a pressing machine to obtain crude palm oil (CPO) and palm kernel.

However, the past methods of palm oil refining might not have been perfect. Thanks to technological advancements, modern refining techniques present a fresh avenue for the palm oil industry to prosper. From Crude Palm Oil to Refined Palm Oil. There are roughly two methods for refining palm oil, each with their own pros and cons.
In pursuit of this, Oil Palm Uganda Limited signed an agreement with the Uganda Government to undertake an integrated palm oil project in Kalangala District of Uganda in 2002. Kalangala Oil Palm project was and still is part of the Ugandan Government Vegetable Oil Development Project (VODP) initiative geared towards increasing Vegetable oil.
