  • Does rapeseed oil lower cholesterol?
  • Research confirm that it can lower the serum total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol and thus the risk of cardiovascular disease. Diets based on rapeseed oil have a positive effect on glucose homeostasis compared to diets based on saturated fats. The oil also shows anticancer effects (Savva and Kafatos 2015).
  • Is rapeseed oil healthier than olive oil?
  • Results: Rapeseed oil diet contained 326 mg more plant sterols than the olive oil diet. Rapeseed oil tended to decrease cholesterol absorption by 11% (P = 0.050), and increased excretion of cholesterol, bile acids, and their sum as sterols by 9% (P = 0.021), 32% (P = 0.038), and 51% (P = 0.011) compared to olive oil.
  • Does rapeseed oil lower atherogenic lipids?
  • Plant sterols from tall or rapeseed oil lowered atherogenic lipids and apo B concentrations similarly, but diverged in their effects on apo B/A1 ratio, α-tocopherol and plant sterol serum concentrations. Rapeseed oil may be a useful source for plant sterol-enriched foods that are consumed with the purpose of reducing serum lipids.
  • Does rapeseed oil contain brassicasterol?
  • Plant sterols extracted from rapeseed oil have a higher content of brassicasterol compared to tall and soybean oils. The effect of a mix of soybean, rapeseed and sunflower seed oil sterols on serum lipid concentrations has been reported but to our knowledge the effect of sterols extracted solely from rapeseed oil has not been reported.
  • What is rapeseed oil?
  • Rapeseed oil is a seed oil, like sunflower or corn oil. It comes from the seeds of a plant from the mustard/cabbage family. Its flowers are bright yellow and turn fields into a sea of gold when in bloom. It is low in saturated fat, the fat that can raise cholesterol levels. In fact, it has the lowest amount of saturated fat of any oil.
  • Can rapeseed oil reduce serum lipids?
  • Rapeseed oil may be a useful source for plant sterol-enriched foods that are consumed with the purpose of reducing serum lipids. We thank Lisa Flakk for study coordination, Eli Anne Myrvoll for dietary advice and Thomas E. Gundersen for vitamin analyses.
