2023. Introduction The extraction of oil from oil seeds and nuts such as cotton, soyabean, olive, corn, mustard seed, palm tree, coconut, carrot, groundnut, sunflower seed, rapeseed, sesame, castor seed etc. across the globe is a common practice and have played a significant part in human diet as source of fat and oil (Aremu and Ogunlade, 2016, Akomaye and Fehintola, 2019).
The oil was recovered by solvent evaporation. It was heated at a low temperature until the solvent finally evaporates leaving behind the oil extracted. Figure 3.1 shows the flow chart for the solvent extraction of Moringa oleifera oil from Moringa seeds.

Seeds (A), kernels (B), fruits (C) and oil (D) of Moringa oleifera.Oil is the main component of the seed and represents 36.7% of the seed weight. The oil can be extracted almost entirely by solvent extraction, generally n-hexane, whereas less yield is obtained by cold press extraction.
- How is Moringa oleifera seed oil extracted?
- Visit for more related articles at Research & Reviews: Journal of Food and Dairy Technology Moringa Oleifera seed oil was extracted using the solvent extraction method. The proximate analysis of the oil was carried out. The physicochemical properties of the oil were also determined.
- Why is the value of Moringa oleifera seed different?
- The difference in value may be attributed to the different methods of extraction used . Moringa oleifera seed has the potential to become a new source of oil and its full potential should be exploited.
- How to optimize moringa seed oil extraction using Box-Behnken experiment?
- Optimization of the moringa seed oil extraction was carried out using the Box-Behnken experimental, by running seventeen experiments with three independent variables which were: sample weight X1, extraction time X2, and solvent volume X3.
- What is the yield of Moringa oleifera oil?
- Table 2: Physicochemical properties of Moringa oleifera oil The oil yield was between 33 – 37% for the replicates, this was in agreement with Solade which got 35 – 40% oil yield in palm kernel. This is also in line with the results given by Abdulkarim et al that gave the value of oil yield from mature seeds of any plant to be between 22 – 43%.
- Is Moringa oleifera seed oil good?
- The optimum value for yield revealed that the oil was economical and that Moringa oleifera seed oil which is of high quality is good for both domestic and industrial use to ameliorate the deficiency of oil consumption in Nigeria. 1.
- Where does moringa oil come from?
- Moringa oil is derived from the seeds which are removed from the pods harvested from Moringa tree. The trees’ origin is traced to the India, precisely; Agra and Oudh which is South of the Himalayas (Mughal et al., 1999; Nielsen, 1994). The Moringa tree has capacity of militating against has weather condition and climate change.
